We certainly would do a lot better with a more thoughtful and engaged electorate and a change in the electoral system. It's so true that in another, more nimble representative democracy we would not have had to endure Bush for so long. The problem is how to change the Constitution when and where where it does not serve us to something better and not worse (like a unitary executive).

Thank you for bringing in Jim Fishkin, and the idea of "deliberative democracy".. the voice of the people when they are thinking.......

Thinking itself is frowned upon in some quarters as being an "elitist" endeavor. People really do need their heads to be engaged in discussion with those of opposing opinion. What is happening, I fear is the opposite: people sorting themselves into groups of like-minded ( as was mentioned)-- so we have our present process with it's manipulations and distractions.

It was Obama himself in insisting on taking the higher road, who gave us the substance in his speeches, who drew the young and old, who made a difference and made a memorable season. I love what Chris said about our ( perhaps) finding a new way with an old process. and too what Fishkin countered with at the end about openness to innovation (and thoughtfulness) and unpredictability.
