What jumps out at me hearing this interview are the very clear implications for those folks who think reparations are in order. A law professor made a similar case back in the 1970s. If Polish slave laborers can be paid for the slavery under the Nazis, it doesn't look like all that big of a leap.

I would say the simple fact that Obama has a great shot at becoming the next president, shows how far the country has come in just a few generations.

Nother You may be right in your thinking as to why journalists don't ask the question. I believe the reason that the msm doesnt ask the follow up question, or the question I'd like answered "How could a man listen to such hatefull, racist, anti American talk for 20 years and do nothing about it, In fact you make this man your mentor and spiritual advisor" Is because they want Obama to succeed,so they abandon their job as journalists and become apologists for him.

It took Fox and the bloggers to bring this story to the publics attention.not the msm.

Personally I don't have a problem with Obama hating whites or disliking his own country,he has that right and I'm sure he feels his reasons are valid, Just don't piss on me and tell me it's raining. Come clean with your true feelings as your wife and the rev Wright have, and let the chips fall where they may.

“He simply wishes to make it possible for a man to be both a Negro and an American, without being cursed and spit upon by his fellows, without having the doors of Opportunity closed roughly in his face.”

-W.E.B. Du Bois “the Souls of Black Folk”

A great show, indeed. I can’t wait to read the book.

Thank you, Mr. Blackmon (what did having that last name mean as a white child), for shinning a light on a dark place, and for bringing some of the chickens home to roost – at least in our conscience.

As the Rev. Wright drama unfolds, I hear all naysayers respond, and they all say the same thing:

“It makes one wonder what Senator Obama REALLY believes.”

What frustrates me to no end is that none of these journalists ask the simple follow up question, what might it be that you’re afraid he believes?

The fact that the journalists don’t even ask that question is telling - they don’t want to know the answer, or maybe I should say, deep down they already know the answer.

If it were any other subject, that follow up question would be a no-brainer.

So if the journalists don’t want to ask the question, and those talking heads don’t want to finish their sentence, I’ll take a stab at completing their thought:

HE’S ANGRY! He pissed off like you can’t believe - scratch that - maybe we can believe, and maybe we can start by reading this book - as will I.

(And maybe just maybe, if we can find it in ourselves to get angry enough, a few of us, black and white and brown all over, might devout ourselves to public service in order to make things right – not Wright, but right.)

The interview with Douglas Blackmon is excellent. I first became somewhat aware of the prison labor neo-slavery system by reading Steel Drivin' Man: John Henry, The Untold Story Of An American Legend, by Scott Reynolds Nelson (Oxford University Press, 2006). His take on the reality behind the legend is that John Henry was a black man caught up in the Virginia penal system and rented out with other convicts to build railroad tunnels already during Reconstruction. The effects were the same, even if the system of going out to find people for petty crimes is not yet fully developed. Nelson's ultimate focus is later uses made of the many variant songs), but he seems to have described the system in its beginnings.
