  1. Potter Says:

We are missing “callers” to lead the discussion and write an opening post for these four essays:

    Spiritual Laws
    Love
    Prudence
    Intellect

The opening post does not have to be a big deal as far as I am concerned- unless you feel like going on and are inspired. I am going to do my best though I feel inadequate. What spurs me on is that I think I am getting a lot out of this and getting to know Emerson a bit better.

We could leave these four for the end. I don’t see why we have to take them in order. So the dates could change again.

    What say you?

  2. peggysue Says:

    Potter,

I picked Art and have been working on my intro today. It is listed last but if there is a lag it could be ready to go at any time. I got enthused (to the neglect of things I was suppose to do today.

I’m toying with wanting to say I’ll do Prudence but am thinking I’d best have a look at it first.

  3. Potter Says:

Peggy Sue-I know what you mean- before I did anything I wanted to feel a pull.

  4. peggysue Says:

    Yep, I’ll take Prudence.

  5. Bobby Says:

    Potter,

I just finished reading Spiritual Laws, and would be more than happy to write the opening post.

    Thanks Potter,

    Bobby

  6. Bobby Says:

    BTW:

    1. Will there be a separate thread for each essay?

    2. If so, should we send our writeup to Mary?

  7. mynocturama Says:

I’ll call “Intellect” if no one else is partial to it.

  8. Potter Says:

I’ll call “Love” if no one else wants it. If anyone else does want it I would defer. Don’t be shy! I am up next with “Self- Reliance”.

Bobby- I think we are rolling out the separate threads as we go. Send your opening post to mary@radioopensource.org Dream up a title if you can.

  9. Bobby Says:

    Will do!

  10. Potter Says:

Okay so that just leaves “Intellect”.

  11. Bobby Says:

peggysue says, “I vote we give we give intellect to livender.”

  12. Bobby Says:

peggysue! What a horrible thing to say ;)

  13. mynocturama Says:

Actually I called “Intellect” a few posts above. Again, I’ll take it unless someone else is especially moved.

  14. Potter Says:

    Sorry Mynocturama, indeed you did.

  15. peggysue Says:

    Bobby you little stinker…

looks like we are all set here… anybody correct me if I’m mistaken but I think the shedule looks like this.

    Self-Reliance, July 20 – Potter
    Compensation, July 27 – Sutter
Spiritual Laws, August 3 – Bobby
    Love, Aug. 10 – Potter
    Friendship, Aug 17 – Andrew
Prudence, Aug 24 – Peggy Sue
    Heroism, Aug 31 – Emmett
    The Over-Soul, Sept. 7 – Bobby
    Circles, Sept. 14 – Allison
    Intellect, Sept. 21 – mynocturama
Art, Sept. 28 – Peggy Sue

  16. Potter Says:

Hey guys- Do you think we should allow more time between each on the schedule or change the schedule? This is not swift reading, though it is not long in pages but people seem to need to catch up for various reasons. We could keep things as they are and just keep rolling in the new ones. The discussions might lag… but so be it.

  17. Sutter Says:

I initially favored an essay per week, but as I’ve been slammed at work, I certainly would favor some extra time (particularly as my date with ROS destiny is approaching very soon!).

  18. Potter Says:

Sutter, I figured you were busy- I am fine with extending this schedule… and/or switching the order if someone else has their opening piece ready. Chris’s report sort of stole center top billing from “Self-Reliance”, a function of the web site design. Not much activity on that thread maybe for other reasons as well.

  19. Bobby Says:

I, too, would prefer if we extended the schedule. To use a silly analogy, with “History” I feel like I just finished an outstanding meal, and just as I push my plate away, ready for a little glass of Port, I hear “and for zee next course, Chef Emerson has prepared another of hiz specialties, Self-Reliance. Bon Appetite.”

    Sutter

It sounds like you’re pretty busy. If you want to swap dates with me, I have no problem with that.

  20. Sutter Says:

Bobby, that would be GRRRR-reat, as Tony used to say. That said, I think we should push it all out a bit anyway.

I’m sorry for being so distracted. I generally avoid those awful lawyers’ hours you hear about, but this summer has proved to be the exception.

  21. Bobby Says:

Silly Sutter, swapping essay dates are for kids! HEY! I never said commercial jingles were my forte :)

If nobody minds, I’ll still post my notes on August 3rd. I still need to finish reading ‘Self-Reliance’. . .as do others considering the few responses it received. Chris stole the limelight, I think. Jerk :)

Sutter, I don’t envy your law hours. I took the LSAT a few years ago, and was applying to school when the lawyers at my mother’s office offered me two choices: either sign a statement stating I would cease applying to law school, or be thrown out the window (their law offices are on the 18th floor). I have yet to meet a lawyer who likes his/her job :(

  22. Sutter Says:

Let me change that — I like my job. I’m in a fun field, filled with interesting policy questions, good people, and not much of the interpersonal strife that makes many legal jobs unappealing (to me, anyway). But the profession does come with some real crunch times!

  23. Bobby Says:

“Interesting policy questions” AND “good people,” you say. Hmmm? That DOES sound fun! At least it sounds better than the last 5 years I had at MSFT. There the questions were “When is X-BOX 360 coming out?” or “Did you see the new employee on the 2nd floor?” I’d have to explain, “It’s called a girl you socially inept freaks!” Poor guys. You kind of just wanted to hand out the kool-aid if you know what I mean :)

Now hurry up, Sutter, and get done what you need to get done. We want to read your opinions of Emerson! :)

  24. Zeke Says:

Not sure if anyone will see this, and I don’t know how to email anyone privately. I would make a suggestion. I think we should combine the discussion of the essays Love and Friendship. Then we should do the same with Prudence and Heroism. Post both introductory essays simultaneously if they have been written, and dicuss the two essays as a pair. In both cases the essays complement each other, looking at aspects of the same phenomenon: in one case, the relations between individuals, and in the other case approaches to life.

This would help us “stay on schedule” as well. I doubt that either pairing would reward more than a week to ten days of discussion.

  25. Zeke Says:

Continuing: Then we could return to the individual schedule for the next three essays, each of which is more of a “heavyweight.”
