Not sure if anyone will see this, and I don't know how to email anyone privately. I would make a suggestion. I think we should combine the discussion of the essays Love and Friendship. Then we should do the same with Prudence and Heroism. Post both introductory essays simultaneously if they have been written, and dicuss the two essays as a pair. In both cases the essays complement each other, looking at aspects of the same phenomenon: in one case, the relations between individuals, and in the other case approaches to life.

This would help us "stay on schedule" as well. I doubt that either pairing would reward more than a week to ten days of discussion.

“Interesting policy questions” AND “good people,” you say. Hmmm? That DOES sound fun! At least it sounds better than the last 5 years I had at MSFT. There the questions were “When is X-BOX 360 coming out?” or “Did you see the new employee on the 2nd floor?” I’d have to explain, “It’s called a girl you socially inept freaks!” Poor guys. You kind of just wanted to hand out the kool-aid if you know what I mean :)

Now hurry up, Sutter, and get done what you need to get done. We want to read your opinions of Emerson! :)

Let me change that -- I like my job. I'm in a fun field, filled with interesting policy questions, good people, and not much of the interpersonal strife that makes many legal jobs unappealing (to me, anyway). But the profession does come with some real crunch times!

Silly Sutter, swapping essay dates are for kids! HEY! I never said commercial jingles were my forte :)

If nobody minds, I’ll still post my notes on August 3rd. I still need to finish reading ‘Self-Reliance’. . .as do others considering the few responses it received. Chris stole the limelight, I think. Jerk :)

Sutter, I don’t envy your law hours. I took the LSAT a few years ago, and was applying to school when the lawyers at my mother’s office offered me two choices: either sign a statement stating I would cease applying to law school, or be thrown out the window (their law offices are on the 18th floor). I have yet to meet a lawyer who likes his/her job :(

Bobby, that would be GRRRR-reat, as Tony used to say. That said, I think we should push it all out a bit anyway.

I'm sorry for being so distracted. I generally avoid those awful lawyers' hours you hear about, but this summer has proved to be the exception.

I, too, would prefer if we extended the schedule. To use a silly analogy, with “History” I feel like I just finished an outstanding meal, and just as I push my plate away, ready for a little glass of Port, I hear “and for zee next course, Chef Emerson has prepared another of hiz specialties, Self-Reliance. Bon Appetite.”

Sutter

It sounds like you’re pretty busy. If you want to swap dates with me, I have no problem with that.
