Harvard Junior on Larry Summers

Who the president is has such little impact on our day-to-day lives that we don’t have strong opinions on it.

Looking on Flickr for a picture of Lawrence Summers, I found only one: Harvard junior Margaret Maloney’s snapshot of Harvard Square importer Cardullo’s, taken last year during the faculty’s first no-confidence vote. You can see the picture on our show post; a sign above the awning states “Much Ado About Nothing – We Support Dr. Summers.”

Sometimes it’s easier to find someone on the internet than it is to walk across the street; I can see Harvard from the window behind me. I called Maloney to see what the students think.

He’s done a lot of really good things over the past five years, but if the faculty is not willing to work with him, there’s no point of having him here. Nothing can be done if they’re not willing to work with each other.

One of the most surprising things is that they chose Derek Bok to the be interim President. When Summers was chosen, there was a lot of talk about taking Harvard in a new direction, but by choosing Bok as interim President, the University is kind of saying ‘oh, the new direction was a bad idea, lets just go back to being our old conservative self.’

My main grudge is that [Summers] doesn’t seem to think very much before he speaks. When he’s speaking, he often gives a bad face to the University. Every time I’ve seen him speak publicly, he’s kind of stuck his foot in his mouth.
