Hot Day at the Zoo

David Miller and David Cleaves, learning mandolin in the studio

Last week for a show with Craig on Craigslist, we decided to see whether we could use Craigslist to summon a live body.

It worked.

We offer to you David Cleaves, a mandolin player with the five-piece traditional band Hot Day at the Zoo. David, sitting at a computer in Lowell, MA, read our request for a live musician at 4:45 in the afternoon; by 5:00 he offered his whole band, and by 6:45 he was in our studio alone. We have a very small studio.

So a heartfelt thanks to David Cleaves, both for hauling himself down to Allston studio on a whim to play the credits music for our show, and for letting Senior Producer David Miller touch his mandolin, which was actually one of the conditions of our Craigslist ad.

David Miller really wants to learn how to play the mandolin.

You can hear Hot Day at the Zoo on their Myspace page, where you will find also a full run-down of their club dates all over New England. And let’s see if we can’t pull some people in to their out-of-town dates, like at the Rodeo Bar on 3rd street in Manhattan on April 16th, or at Phil’s Grill in Virginia Beach on April 21st.

It was great to meet you, David Cleaves.
