Thank you for this. I was not very familar with Louis Jordan, so this was a treat to say the least.

And Sonny? He's pretty good. I think I like him. :-)

When I got my first computer several months ago, one of the first things I discovered were the jazz videos on youtube. When I first watched the Louis Jordan/Caldonia video, I was stunned. There are artists who sing the song, play the instrument, write the poem and there are the artists who are able to allow art to move through them -- singing, playing, writing itself. Last year a man came into the store where I work and we talked about many things, among them meditation. He asked if I believed I had a spirit. I said that I did. He said, "You don't HAVE a spirit. You ARE a spirit." Sonny Rollins knows that about himself. Remember that he lived in an ashram in India for a while and is a practicing Buddhist. I have one word for artists who want to create something great. Meditate.

Oh, boy... a Louis Jordan connection! My dad's record collection was rather spare, but his "music heroes"- Louis Jordan & Art Tatum- were fairly well represented. I had learned at least one of Jordan's "jump" tunes by age 8 or 9... a song called "Chartreuse"- about his girl friend being so mad that she dyed her hair Chartreuse. (Talk about being "ahead of the curve"..!) Louis was one of the "big honkin' sax" players... like Illinois Jaquet (& later on, King Curtis). It's a real treat to have the Sonny Rollins tape to compare his early work with these guys... ^..^
