Mary's Notes, June 1, 2007

At week’s end the ROS coffers have been enriched by $20,981 and by all of your good wishes and support. If you’re one of our 392 donors and you’d like to receive a small token of our appreciation, send Greta your t-shirt size and mailing address at greta radioopensource org (turn it into an email address). If you haven’t contributed yet, or you know someone who hasn’t, please think about lending a hand. We’re hoping to get to $76,000 and we have some potential backers in the wings to do some of the heavy lifting.

Many of you have also offered fund-raising ideas and advice, all of which is helpful. We’re always looking for sponsors and underwriters; it’s tricky to find the right match, namely a company that’s more interested in an association with us for our ideas and not purely the number of listeners we offer. We’re not opposed to non blaring, tasteful ads and things like a monthly sponsors program or a podcast subscription program. Mostly what we could use is a part time business development person who’s got some experience and contacts in the new media and technology world and a fund-raising track record.

In other business, read The Plague for Monday and all of Norman Mailer for Tuesday. We’ll be back on Monday all caffeinated and charged up thanks to Greta’s gift of Mountain Thunder coffee beans straight from the big island of Hawaii. Aloha!

Alright. I’ll be the one. The one to ask the question that everyone is too civil to ask.

    What if…

    … time runs out?

… a benefactor is not found?

… not enough money is raised?

Is there a “Plan B” for the program, and would you mind sharing it with us?

For whatever it’s worth, I think it might be better if ROS *doesn’t* share a Plan B with the public. It could…and probably would…remove a lot of the incentive for people to donate.

One other thing I forgot to ask about in the fundraising effort (and I understand if ROS can’t answer this in a public forum) but is it feasible to charge more to affiliates to carry the show? Affiliate fees don’t usually generally amount to much, but a dollar is a dollar.
