In his book “The Johnstown Flood”, David McCullough writes about “two crucial mistakes” the people of Johnstown made. First he writes about the dam they built.
“In the first place, they had tampered drastically with the natural order of things and had done so badly.” “Perhaps worst of all they had failed-out of indifference mostly-to comprehend the possible consequences of what they were doing, and particularly what those consequences might be should nature happen to behave in anything but the normal fashion, which of course, was exactly what was to be expected of nature. As one New England newspaper wrote: ‘The lesson of the Conemaugh Valley flood is that the catastrophes of Nature have to be regarded in the structures of man as well as its ordinary laws.’
As someone who lived in New Orleans for a year, I can report that the fact that the place is BELOW SEA LEVEL was a common topic of conversation. To walk the short distance to the river from the Quarter one must walk UP HILL. In retrospect, I think the impending danger may have contributed to the-live in the moment- energy that was so pervasive in the city.
McCullough later writes that the people of Johnstown “went along on the assumption that the people who were responsible for their safety were behaving responsibly. And this was the second mistake.”
Again, as someone who lived in “The Big Easyâ€?, the second most discussed topic was the rampant corruption within the city. The levee breaks—what comes gushing out is complacency shrouded in sloth, avarice, and neglect.
Sure, the Bush administration has its fault in this, but the conversation should begin with the “two crucial mistakes� that Mr. McCullough alerted us to…in vain!!!

Has anyone thought that this may be the first of a “time of disaster” in which the power of nature, fueled by global warming, pollution, and too many people, overwhelm our ability to take care of ourselves. I have always turned to science fiction for “what might be” kind of ideas. Bruce sterlings heavy weather paints a future in which there are whole disaster cultures based around repeated hurricanes and tornadoes and droughts and floods. I see our inability to deal with things like katrina and rita and others as a first taste of what its going to be like. our government is lead by a bunch of long neck birds with their heads in the sand. we are not dealing with the causes of these problems and because we wont deal with them we are going to literly reap the whirlwind.
