Send Us Your Music

We like music here at Open Source, and we like new music, and we use a lot of it in the show, and — most important — we want to avoid the standard trap of sorting through label music we have lying around. So we want your music. Give it to us.

So if you’re a musician or you’re in a band, send us your music. If we like it, we’ll use it on the show and link to you with a credit and hopefully some of the 40,000 or so different people who come to our site each month will buy your music.

See? How simple is that?

What we’re looking for (and what we’re not)

  • Instrumental tracks only. NO LYRICS! Lyrics will automatically disqualify your music.
  • Music must be released under Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike license or in the public domain. If your music is licensed under ASCAP, SESAC, BMI or any of the other major licensing companies, we will not be able to use it (because we podcast).

To send us music, post a comment on this thread with a link to the actual mp3 files posted online. If you’re worried about bandwidth, check out the Internet Archive, which will host any CC-licensed media for free.

Please include the following in the post

  • Your name and the name of your band
  • The name of the track(s)
  • Where you’re from
  • Links to your website if you have one

To post a comment you will have to register on the site. When you do so, please leave a valid email address, as this will be our only way of contacting you. If we use your music on the show we will notify you by email and credit you — with a link — on our site.

Most of my work at http://www.soundclick.com/artist/7/keithsnyder_music.htm combines spoken word (stories, found sounds, recitations, etc.) with music, but if you scroll down, all the pieces with the word “Ambience” in the title are, well, ambient. No lyrics.

I actually created them because I couldn’t find the right music to write my last novel to, but they’ve served their purpose, so I opened them up to Creative Commons licenses a while ago.

Album: The Journey of Enoch LP

    Catalog#: EXP005

    Archive.org: Visit

Description:The Journey of Enoch (Film From a Dream) Score Chapter One Dark analog film score ambience for a film concept in very early stages. jbible’s the Journey of Enoch is the essence of dark ambient. its your dreams in sonic form. its your thoughts objectively manifested. Its your reminder that you are alive, while tricking you into thinking you are dead at the same time. Its a monster crawling from underneath the soil and into the shadows as natural as a breeze and incognito as a microscopic parasite feeding on your dead skin. The Journey of Enoch is inexplainable. It leaves the listener speechless during, and after the intake of the album. The only way to do it justice is to take a week off from all responsibility and let this masterpiece wash over you for days on end. Highly recommended to anyone who wants to gain a higher understanding of what your brain does without you.

Magnatune is basically a public interest record label. Their entire catalogue is available on a noncommercial-attribute-sharealike Creative Commons license, all downloadable. I’m planning to use a lot of their stuff for my podcasts and video blogs, particularly when I’m working overseas, because of their great collection of world music. I was actually supposed to go to Turkey this week but it got cancelled; I may have to find another reason to go just so I can use their killer Turkish music. :-)
