This is one I would like to listen to again. The span Hobsbawm's mind, at 90, or at any age, is amazing. Not only the span but the evaluation, the assessment, the sobriety. Of course it has always been true that we never knew where we were going ( or what we were doing) but now it's happening at a worrisome pace. "Time" is speeding up ( so to speak). It's interesting to hear Hobsbawm's thoughts about and respect for Niall Ferguson.

My other comments-

How wonderful the British! (I did not know how dependent they were on the US for their power/status.)

And here in this interview there seems to be a difference with Parag Khanna about the Euros.

Thank you Chris- once again- for bringing this voice to us.

Ahh yes .... Eric Hobspawn still fighting the good fight on behalf of the sevrile proletarian.

Nothing beats what he said about the Hungarian uprising:
<i>While approving, with a heavy heart, of what is now happening in Hungary, we should therefore also say frankly that we think the USSR should withdraw its troops from the country as soon as this is possible"</i>

Eric Hobsbawm is our great intellectual hero, especially in these times. Thanks to Chris Lydon for setting up and conducting this excellent interview, and to Eric Hobsbawm himself for his ever-inspiring and useful provocations to thought.

Wonderful stuff, and more evidence of how important it is to hear from the grown-ups. More, please. Hobsbawm himself a version of Braudel's longue durée. Lovely to hear his ironic shock at the memory of "Bible bashers" (sic) voting for Roosevelt, or the transformation of the formerly progressive Midwest into the regressive, color-coded abstraction it seems today. Great interview, many thanks.
