Micheal Wood's series is indeed beautiful and compelling. Glad Patrick Heller brought up the significant gaps in analysis by the likes of Tom Friedman (World is Flat).

Still not tired of listening to this series about India and I expect the next episode to maybe be an edition of "parachute radio" with Chris sampling Indian food for us. I keep thinking that whatever one thinks about empire and colonialism, particularly the British, they left a lot behind when they left which has helped countries, in this case India, modernize, organize, join and compete in the global community. Not the least of British contributions to India was the English language.

I do remember a time when ( in the late 60's and 70's) Indian exports were commonly cotton bedspreads, hippie clothes, incense and brass knickknacks.

Years ago PBS/BBC 's Michael Wood (bubbling with enthusiasm) did a larger series ( Legacy?) -and one long episode in it on India that was brilliant, unforgettable, that showed a magical land. This link, though, is a newer Michael Wood series ( 2007?) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UpsGTR_ETg8 - a string of episodes to watch... which I have not yet seen.

My public note to myself: finish the Satyajit Ray Apu trilogy already....
